More Sign Ordinance Missteps for Chatham

CHATHAM, N.J — Chatham’s new sign ordinance process, two full years in the making,  ended in an typical political red tape when Chatham’s Mayor, Nelson Vaughan, vetoed the language that had been previously approved by the Town Council.  However, the council was able to override the veto with a unanimous  vote on Monday, October the 24th.

Vaughn’s veto took everyone by surprise since the Mayer had not expressed any issues with the ordinance during the two years it was being drafted.  Apprantly, the section that covers political signs caught his ire. While the ordinance has been a topic of discussion on many occasions, the board had voted for it previously, with the Mayor’s approval from his position on the planning board. Continue reading

Neon Signs in Wildwood, New Jersey

Walk the streets of New Jersey’s Five Mile Island, and you’ll see that neon signs dominate the streetscape.  Signs that read Edon Roc, Bel Air, and Biscayne call out to weary drivers just as they did years ago , creating a nostalgic feel throughout the area.

Wildwood boasts the world’s biggest array of 1950’s style motels. These motels feature neo-futuristic themes with angled roofs, creatively shaped swimming pools and an overall design theme that often includes “tacky” features like pink flamingos and plastic spaceships.

The History of Neon Signs

The principals that enable neon signs go all the way back to 1675, well before electricity was invented, when an astronomer named  Jean Picard noticed a very faint glow in a barometer.  Note this quote from a book written in 1694:
